Basalt: Basalt mineral information and data.

A mafite containing mostly calcic plagioclase, clinopyroxene +/- olivine, foids, oxides and rarely quartz. A general term for fine-grained, mafic (dark-colored) igneous rocks, commonly extrusive (volcanic) but locally intrusive (e.g., as dikes or pipes), composed chiefly of plagioclase and clinopyroxene; the fine-grained equivalent of gabbro.

Geology - rocks and minerals - University of Auckland

Basalt Basalt is a mafic extrusive rock, is the most widespread of all igneous rocks, and comprises more than 90% of all volcanic rocks. Because of its relatively low silica content, basalt lava has a comparatively low viscosity, and forms thin flows that can travel long distances.

Basalt - Wikipedia

Basalt commonly features a very fine-grained or glassy matrix interspersed with visible mineral grains. The average density is 3.0 g/cm 3 . Basalt is defined by its mineral content and texture, and physical descriptions without mineralogical context may be unreliable in some circumstances.

Because of the presence of such oxide minerals, basalt can acquire strong magnetic signatures as it cools, and paleomagnetic studies have made extensive use of basalt. In tholeiitic basalt, pyroxene (augite and orthopyroxene or pigeonite) and calcium-rich plagioclase are common phenocryst minerals.

Basalt ~ Learning Geology

Basalt is a fine grained volcanic igneous rock formed of plagioclase and pyroxene minerals. It is most commonly formed by lava flow and in sills and dykes.Basalt is similar to gabbro in composition but the difference lies in the grain size of the two rocks.

Basalt - Igneous rocks

Basalt metamorphoses to a number of different rock types, depending on pressure, temperature, and the nature of volatile compounds that react with minerals in basalt. Most common metamorphic rocks with basaltic protolith are chlorite schist, amphibolite, blueschist, and eclogite .

Basalt fiber - Wikipedia

Basalt fiber is a material made from extremely fine fibers of basalt, which is composed of the minerals plagioclase, pyroxene, and olivine. It is similar to fiberglass, having better physicomechanical properties than fiberglass, but being significantly cheaper than carbon fiber.
